The Merano Christmas Markets, which return from 29 November to 6 January, reflect the spirit of the Alpine city.

Handicrafts and local specialties

The Merano Christmas markets, which open on 28th evening and end on 6 January, provide a winter atmosphere that becomes an attraction for all those who wish to celebrate the Advent period. Overlooking the River Passirio and its Passer Promenade, interesting handicrafts made in South Tyrol and typical local dishes will tempt visitors. For those seeking relaxation, there is no need to travel far as Merano’s thermal baths are an oasis of pools, saunas and treatments with local products.

St Nicholas and the Krampus

Watch out for the cowbells that herald the arrival of the traditional Krampus. These scary figures from Alpine folklore roam the little houses in the markets on certain days as they accompany St Nicholas, their origins lost in the mists of time.  Nicholas is the patron saint of Merano with a long white beard and he hands out sweets to good children, while the naughty Krampus enjoy frightening passers-by.

A journey through the little houses

Step by step, from one little house to another, visitors can discover the variety and originality of the many products and articles on sale, ranging from handicrafts to South Tyrolean farm produce and from Christmas decorations to... much more. The streets are also dotted with gastronomic stops to enjoy a Brezel, a knotted ring-shaped bread with a shiny, golden crust, a plate of speck which is South Tyrol's gastronomic ambassador, or a beer.

DIY for little hands

The little ones are welcomed by an enchanted world of games, fun and wonders. The Christmas atmosphere is enthralling, and children can experience it by choosing from a wide range of activities, from making biscuits to jewellery to Christmas decorations, playing board games or watching screenings of Disney classics.
