American Airlines' summer from Rome begins with the return of daily flights from six US Airports.

New daily flights from Miami International Airport

With flights from New York JFK, Chicago and Charlotte, in addition to the year-round flights to Philadelphia, daily flights to Dallas Fort Worth were reintroduce from 6 June. The airline will also launch new daily flights to Fiumicino from Miami International Airport: with this latest addition, American brings to six the number of US hubs connected to Rome.

“Rome is one of the most popular destinations in our network”

“We are thrilled to announce the start of our summer operations at Rome Fiumicino Airport, connecting this market with a record number of six US hubs,- said José Freig, VP international and contact centre operations American Airlines. - Rome is one of the most popular destinations in our global network and we are happy to be able to offer our passengers up to six flights a day, including the new connections with our Miami hub.”

The US is Rome Fiumicino’s leading long-haul market

“With the start of the summer 2025 season, we are preparing to set new records in terms of transatlantic traffic, a trend supported by the substantial contribution of American Airlines which, thanks also to the future new direct Rome-Miami flight, confirms Fiumicino as the reference hub for flights to North America,- said Ivan Bassato, chief aviation officer Aeroporti di Roma. -With a record number of destinations on offer, the airline will further expand travel opportunities, once again confirming the importance of connections with the United States, the leading long-haul market for Rome.”

Italy continues to captivate American travelers, cementing its position as a top international destination with increased international flights, roots tourism and hidden gems.

The allure of Italy remains unmatched

For 2025 Italy for the American market seems it is already surpassing evergreens like Greece, Bali, Costa Rica, and Japan. It’s all about the allure of Italy which remains unmatched, with its sun-drenched beaches, history, culture, and gastronomy.A growing trend fueling this surge is "roots travel," with more Americans seeking deeper connections to their ancestral heritage. Recognizing this, Italy dedicated last year as the "Year of Italian Roots in the World.”

Lesser-known destinations are drawing travellers

An increasing number of trans-Atlantic travelers are also opting for lesser-known destinations to escape the crowds. Venice and the Cinque Terre are, of course, on everyone’s list (and that’s just the problem), but hidden gems like the little town of Bolgheri, with its enchanting vineyards and old-world charm, are quickly becoming must-visit spots for those looking for an authentic Italian experience.

US carriers are adding new flights

Enhanced air connectivity is further boosting Italy’s appeal.  American Airlines is only one of the many carriers expanding its non-stop routes to major hubs like Rome and Milan, in fact this summer will see AA’s most extensive operations to Italy in its history. These additional direct flights are making it easier than ever for U.S. travelers to experience La Dolce Vita without the hassle of multiple connections.

The ETIAS requirement is simple with a minimum fee

While accessibility is improving, new travel requirements are on the horizon. Beginning in mid-2025, American visitors to Italy will need to complete the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) process before arrival. But the online application is simple, with quick approval and only a nominal fee, ensuring a seamless transition for U.S. tourists eager to explore Italy’s rich offerings.

2025 will be another record-breaking year

Italy is on track for yet another record-breaking year in tourism. In 2024, an estimated 62.2 million international visitors were drawn by the country's rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and world-renowned cuisine. This surge in tourism is expected to continue in this, the Holy Jubilee Year, bringing an unprecedented influx of travelers to Rome – projections are for some 35 million visitors – and making 2025 another standout year for Italian tourism.

Naples, a city of events, heritage, and multicultural charm, is the third most visited city in Italy.

Naples welcomed 14 million visitors in 2024

Naples is focusing on events and preparing to welcome increasingly diverse forms of tourism “A city like Naples – the third most visited in Italy with over 14 million tourists, and a significant growth compared to the 12.5 million of 2023 – is at the BIT to showcase the strategies and actions we are implementing to capture new targets,-  said Naples’ tourism councillor Teresa Armato. -Naples is undergoing an extraordinary transformation: from a city of passing traffic to a destination of international importance and charm.

Events will play a major role in 2025

A valuable role is played by the DMO, which allows us to develop concrete promotional activities and diversify, reaching out also to international markets,” said Armato who, together with Professor Valentina della Corte, head of the DMO, presented “Naples, a New City” Events will play a major role this year, starting with the upcoming celebrations for the 2500th anniversary of the founding of Naples, coinciding with the Jubilee Year and featuring tours of convents and monasteries, and a cultural programme of theatre, music, visual arts and literature.

The Italian city most clicked on by Italian visitors

The “See Naples and Die” format will continue to promote lesser-known itineraries, helping to decongest the historic centre, and better distribute tourist flows.  In 2024, the city’s main inbound markets were France, the United States, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom. Only recently Parclick.it, the leading car park portal in Europe, defined Naples as the Italian city most clicked on by Italian visitors, with a 19% increase in demand compared to the previous year and fourth behind Paris, Amsterdam and London.

Capodichino Airport handled 8.9 million international visitors

Naples’ Capodichino Airport ended the year with 8,900,000 international visitors and from 17 May Air Canada will operate Montreal-Naples direct flights for the summer. Naples Municipality has announced that work is underway to expand Capodichino Airport, and that direct flights from Beijing and Tokyo will be launched by 2026.

The former educational institution has been converted and is so called because of the centuries-old trees that shade its terraced gardens. Salerno is a crossroads that appeals for its beauty, culture and history said tourism councillor Alessandro Ferrara at the recent Mediterranean Tourism Exchange in Naples.

“Tourism can be a fundamental driving force for development”

alessandro ferrara

Salerno has a wide range of tourist attractions and an exceptional blend of history, art, culture, good food and wines, as well as warm hospitality.  Adding to which there is the airport, maritime station and high-speed railway making the city easily reached from anywhere in Italy and the world. It is also in a truly privileged position close to the Amalfi Coast, Paestum and Pompeii. “The city of Salerno and the whole of the Campania region are increasingly well-known tourist destinations worldwide,- said Alessandro Ferrara. – But we still have to grow, and tourism can be a fundamental driving force for development.”

salerno 3

What is the profile of the typical tourist who chooses Salerno?

There isn't a specific profile of the tourist who visits our city. We welcome tourists from Italy, Europe, the Americas and Asia and generally we have more foreign visitors than Italians. As well as visiting Salerno, the city is also chosen as a base for excursions to the two the Amalfi Coast and the splendid Cilento.

salerno 2

Was 2024 a good year for tourism, and what markets are you looking at?

“In addition to our natural beauty, a major boost is provided by our infrastructure system. Since it opened the Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi Airport has posted numbers that have gone well beyond even the rosiest  forecasts. In addition to this, the new underground railway is under construction, as well as high-speed rail and road and sea links. All this in an area of incomparable natural beauty, with a vast wealth of historical, cultural, landscape, architectural and food and wine heritage, which makes us optimistic for further growth in the future.”  Yes, we are looking at international markets, first and foremost the European market. But we are also working with American and Asian markets, and various contacts are also underway with China and areas of the Middle East.

How much does organized tourism contribute?

It represents a fundamental segment in various aspects.  With a lot of coaches arriving in the city at weekends and then there are the cruise passengers, who are organised in groups with guides. There are some tour operators in Rome that include a guided tour of Salerno in their packages, and the travel by train. In addition to heritage tourism, there is also the promotion of the city based on word of mouth, which plays a significant role – and it is free of charge.

Milan Malpensa airport is on an upward sswing with airlines thanks to the opening of long-haul routes.

In 2024 Milan’s two airports handled 39.6 million passengers

This is an upward trend that is not destined to stop, as is confirmed in an interview in the newspaper Il Corriere della Sera with Armando Brunini, CEO of SEA Aeroporti, the company that manages Milan’s Linate and Malpensa airports. “We have pulled it off, without being the hub of a large airline.” In 2024, thanks to a boom in new connections with China the two Milan airports handled 39.6 million passengers, 11.4% more than the previous year.

“All this without having a hub carrier”

According to Brunini, “Growth will continue, but we don't expect it to be at the same pace as 2024. The demand surprises us because it resists despite everything: the fares, the tensions and fears regarding wars and geopolitics.”  In particular, the CEO highlights the significant boost in capacity offered to China, where “we have gone from three to 10 destinations. While in Asia, in the last six years, we have gone from 15 to 27 destinations, which makes us fourth in Europe for the destinations reached. And all this without having a hub carrier.”

Malpensa is a money-spinner for carriers

The great attraction of Malpensa is fact that the airport is profitable for carriers: “For some companies on medium-long flights it is the European destination where they make the most money, for others it is third or fourth. And this is thanks to the population, to the GDP which is among the highest on the continent, to the good balance between incoming and outgoing flows. And  Milan has also become a destination.”

Room for more US flights

The main market is still North America, with numerous carriers and connections, but not yet enough: “There's room for more.”  And Brunini has his eye on cities such as Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco and maybe even Washington, without forgetting Latin America with “Mexico City and Lima.”
