A colourful market

Among the valley’s historic and significant events, Segra Sacun stands out as the most important market. Following tradition, on 9 October Segra Sacun will fill the square of Ortisei with vibrant stalls selling typical gastronomic and craft products. This market is not just about commerce as it carries an ancient romantic tradition. During these festive days, bachelors have traditionally gifted their ladies with a pear adorned with a coloured bow. If the lady is interested, she will dye an egg in the following months, and the brave bachelor must collect it in person at Easter.

Michelin-starred and Ladino restaurants

Simultaneously, Ortisei will host an exciting gastronomic event until 15 October, Culinarium Urtijëi which showcases Val Gardena's typical local cuisine and its peasant roots. Ortisei, the largest town in Val Gardena, renowned for its diverse gastronomy, is home to famous Michelin-starred restaurants as well as traditional Ladin eateries. While agriculture may be a secondary activity for most farms in Val Gardena, it is the farmers who play a crucial role in shaping the gastronomic culture. They focus is on environmental respect and health, preserving ancient Gardena recipes.

To close October this northern Italian region celebrates its honey, which is produced in the traditional way without undergoing heat treatment. From 27 to 29 October the streets of Châtillon showcase various local types of honey. Autumn also signals the arrival of chestnuts, with events organised in Donnas, Fénis, Avise, and Courmayeur at the end of October. These events offer cheerful outdoor experiences for visitors.

The Expo Tuscia project from the DMO is a blueprint for targeted territorial marketing.

“The Expo Tuscia DMO is a tool to trigger virtuous processes”

The project stems from an important consideration,” says Vincenzo Peparello, president of the DMO. -A profound change in distribution has led to new needs and lifestyles in a society that was changed by the pandemic. This has impacted strongly on travel and seen the arrival of a “new” kind of tourist.  And so the Expo Tuscia DMO was set up as a tool to trigger virtuous processes combining territorial and entrepreneurial marketing through targeted actions involving both public and private players.”

The need to reposition Tuscia as a destination

"Destinations must be able to offer thematic tourism to a target clientele that is increasingly interested in the quality of life of a destination, its excellence and sustainability,- says destination manager Francesco Comotti. -With this awareness, and taking into account the objectives of the EU and of the PNRR, we have to reposition our destination to respond to the new needs of national and international tourism.”

The focus is on heritage and religious tourism

“Tuscia wants to propose alternative and complementary products on the Italian and international markets, but also niche products linked to our culture and traditions, food and wines,- says Pepparello, and we will also promote trekking and the environment.” Ample space will also be given to heritage and religious tourism in anticipation of the 2025 Jubilee. “Experiential tourism enhances individual entrepreneurial skills, is more responsible and coherent and respects places and local communities.”

Boosting the economic and cultural added value that tourists bring

In this scenario Expo Tuscia becomes an effective tool for the strategic objectives in the Lazio Region's tourism development plans, such as the redistribution of tourist flows, and lengthening the season and the stay. "We see ourselves as an instrument for the realization of these aims," says Francesco Comotti, -and we will take concrete steps to put the spotlight on boosting the economic and cultural added value that tourists bring to a destination.”

With sustainable travel and tourism no longer an option but a necessity, Tuscany has adopted a long-term vision of sustainability.

Under the guidance of the regional Toscana Promozione Turistica agency, a group of eco-sensitive tour operators joined forces to design a manifest of values of sustainable tourism. This manifest, to which all regional businesses can voluntarily adhere, formalizes the principles of sustainable tourism in Tuscany, advocating practical actions and an awareness of the impact of human actions on the environment and on local communities. The manifest, which is in the final drafting stage, is being presented at TTG Experience in Rimini alongside a communications campaign.

In the coming months Tuscan companies will be invited to collaborate with the regional tourism portal by forwarding offers and proposals consistent with the manifest. These hundreds of certified enterprises, which include those in parks that adhere to the European charter of sustainable tourism, and the thousands of Tuscan concerns with the Sustainable Booking travel badge, have all implemented measures to make their guests' stays more sustainable.

Organic and Michelin Green Star restaurants will also join, as will organic producers and participants in Vetrina Toscana, the Region's project promoting wine and food tourism, in collaboration with Unioncamere.
