Noto. Sicily’s Baroque masterpiece of beauty in the Mediterranean

Noto, a small yet vibrant city in southeastern Sicily, is a Mediterranean Baroque masterpiece.

Standing as a testament to the grandeur of Sicilian Baroque architecture, with its honey-colored limestone buildings, sweeping staircases, and ornate facades, Noto is a feast for the senses.  For history enthusiasts, food lovers or anyone seeking a leisurely escape, Noto offers an experience you they won’t forget.   The nearest airport to Noto is Catania Fontanarossa Airport (CTA), approximately 90 kilometers away. From the airport, visotirs can rent a car - a popular choice for exploring Sicily - or take a combination of bus and train services to reach the city. For those arriving by train, Noto is connected via the Siracusa railway station.

The May flower festival is a must-see

Exploring the city should start at Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the main thoroughfare lined with splendid buildings and lively piazzas. Highlights include the Cathedral of San Nicolò, whose striking dome dominates the skyline. A short walk leads to the Church of San Domenico, a masterpiece of Baroque design. For art lovers the Palazzo Nicolaci di Villadorata, with its intricately carved balconies, is a must-visit and for those visiting in May, the Infiorata di Noto, a floral festival transforming the streets into vibrant mosaics, is an unforgettable spectacle.

Golden beaches and archaeological sites

A leisurely afternoon can be spent strolling through the Villa Romana del Tellaro, an archaeological site with stunning mosaics. Nature enthusiasts should head to the nearby Riserva Naturale di Vendicari, a haven for birdwatchers and beachgoers alike, or, for a more laid-back experience, unwind at the Calamosche Beach, known for its golden sands, crystal-clear waters and serene surroundings.  

Delight in Sicily’s delectable cuisine 

Sicilian cuisine is rich and flavorful, and Noto is no exception. Starting with the local Arancini stuffed rice balls, or the Pasta alla Norma, a local favorite made with eggplant, tomatoes, and Ricotta Salata cheese. Sweet lovers should not leave without trying the Cannoli, little pastry tubes filled with a variety of creamy ricotta cheese a wide variety of flavourings, and the region’s famed Granita al Limone, lemon sorbet.
