Rome’s Hotel d'Inghilterra recently reopened its doors after a complete refurbishment.

Just a few steps from the Spanish Steps

Originally built as a private residence for guests of the Palazzo Torlonia, which is located directly opposite, since its transformation into a hotel in the mid 19th century, the Hotel d'Inghilterra became the refuge of the international elite, thanks also to its location just a few steps from the Spanish Steps and Via Condotti.

Conserving historic architectural elements

Now, after an extensive renovation of the historic facade the rooms and suites, the Cafè Romano restaurant and the lounges that for centuries have welcomed artists, men of letters and global travellers, the Starhotels group's Roman property has been restored to its original splendour. The project was supervised by the Florentine company's design team, coordinated by Elisabetta Fabri, president and CEO of Starhotels. The work respected the building's heritage, taking a meticulous approach that also involved the conservation of historic architectural elements and the restoration of precious antiques and furnishings.

A new spa and an exclusive rooftop terrace

Like a cozy home, the rooms and suites, reduced from 84 to 80 to leave more space for the interiors, each boast a distinct character and design, while the Cafè Romano Restaurant will unveil a new gastronomic experience in the coming weeks. To complete the offer, the Hotel d'Inghilterra will soon have a new spa and an exclusive rooftop terrace, which will allow guests to admire the Eternal City from a privileged perspective.

At TTG 2024, ENIT highlighted a range of themes from sustainability, climate-conscious tourism and business travel with a focus on well-being, to heritage tourism, innovation, and shopping tourism. Year after year Italy consolidates its position as a top international tourist hotspot. This year, the Year of Heritage Tourism, the country’s allure is stronger than ever, with a 15.2% surge in international airport passengers in the first seven months alone, according to Assaeroporti.

This positive trend finds Italy with the wind in its sails, and prudent flow management strategies will enable operators to move closer to saturation levels. ENIT is concentrating on sustainability, verifying and monitoring the ecological footprint of tourists, the impact of tourism on destinations, and the ability of businesses to put into practice the sustainability criteria laid down by the EU. It is also supporting destinations with traditional, web, and social communications aimed at an increasingly more aware tourist, working towards the creation of a complex and composite model for a stronger sustainable regeneration of the entire tourism system.

One relevant area is the ability to manage climate change, for which ENIT is analyzing data and best practices to provide destinations with viable solutions for emergencies through planned actions that can counter change, while making its tourism destinations increasingly safe, attractive and exciting. This revolution of the tourism system in a green key is accompanied by shifts in focus necessary to make the Italian tourist offer increasingly competitive.

In addition to the immense heritage of Italy's cultural and natural resources, typical products and food and wine, the professionals who work to make travel experiences memorable and unique must be put back at the centre of the development of tourism.  To boost employee satisfaction we need to implement processes and models that enhance both service efficiency and staff well-being. At the same time digital growth plays a crucial role, driven by innovative solutions from the start-up ecosystem aimed at transforming the tourism industry and improving the services offered.

Our ability to tell the story of Italy’s vitality is passed on to tourists through our natural and cultural landscapes, history, traditions, rituals and local excellences. It is a story that brings countless international travellers back to Italy to visit relatives and friends (7 million in 2023 for 76.8 million overnight stays and €11.2 billion in spending), rediscovering their origins in the year that celebrates Heritage Tourism in Italy.

ENIT recently highlighted the heritage tourism theme in the Italian Village at the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal marking the arrival of the Amerigo Vespucci ship for the first time in Japan, on a tour that included Buenos Aires, Los Angeles, Tokyo, and will continue to Singapore, Darwin and Mumbai. Italy's renowned shopping districts and fashion streets are among the key attractions promoted by ENIT through its 26 international offices, and they draw 7.7 million international visitors annually who contribute €1.2 billion to tourism spending.

Palazzo Castelluccio, to open in Noto in 2026, will be the third property in Sicily for the Rocco Forte Group.

The interiors will be by Olga Polizzi

When it opens in 2026, the new property will feature 31 rooms, a restaurant, bar, meeting and event spaces, a spa, gym and garden. This 5,000 sqm property will complement the company's two existing facilities in the region: the Villa Igiea in Palermo and the Verdura Resort in Sciacca. Taking care of the interiors, as was already the case for Rocco Forte House Milan, will be the group's vice-president and design director, Olga Polizzi, in collaboration with architects Paolo Moschino and Philip Vergeylen.

Made from local limestone which turns a honeyed gold

Located in the heart of the city, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Palazzo Castelluccio is one of the largest noble residences in the Val di Noto. Built in 1782 by the Marquis of Lorenzo del Castelluccio, it was one of the most important buildings to be rebuilt 100 years after the catastrophic earthquake of 1,693 in which most of the city was tragically destroyed. In line with the new architectural style of the time, it was made of compacted local limestone, which turns a golden honey-coloured glow when struck by sunlight.

Rocco Forte to open four new hotels in three years

Unlike the predominantly Baroque architecture that dominates Noto, Palazzo Castelluccio is neoclassical in style and originally had 105 rooms, including a music room, a chapel and a ballroom. The Sicilian new entry is part of four new Rocco Forte openings planned over the next three years in Milan, Sardinia and Naples.

A new look for an aristocratic building

The two historic buildings belonging to the Florentine aristocratic Gaddi and Arrighetti families, the former Nh Collecton Palazzo Gaddi, have frescoed rooms with paintings and objets d'art, many dating back to the 16th century. The palace, an expression of typical Florentine architecture, has recently been renovated by two internationally renowned interior designers, Patrizia Quartero and Guy Oliver, who have preserved the character and noble spirit of its Renaissance history.

Ninfa, a beautiful and romantic garden, just over an hour south-east of Rome, has been called the most beautiful and romantic garden in the world by the New York Times.

In the province of Latina not far from Rome

The name Ninfa (nymph) comes from an ancient Roman temple that was dedicated to the nymphs that were the goddesses of water.  This oasis was created by the Caetani family on the ruins of the medieval city of the same name and it is in a beautiful position, at the foot of the Lepini Mountains in the province of Latina in the Lazio region.

The garden is a WWF Oasis and a natural monument

Every year from March to November, but only on certain days of the year (check on the website at the bottom of this article) so as to preserve the delicate environmental balance, guided tours are organized around the gardens.  On 20 acres it has over 1,300 plant species as well as the ruins of a castle and many streams that form a small lake.   In 1976 a WWF Oasis was established to support the flora and fauna, while in 2000 the whole area of Ninfa was declared a natural monument and is visited by over 70,000 tourists a year. We suggest visiting in April and May when the garden is at its most colourful.

A romantic English-style garden

Down the centuries the ancient town of Ninfa was destroyed and rebuilt several times. In 1298 it was purchased by the Caetani family, and for a hundred years disputed between them and the Borgias. It was only towards the end of the 19th century that the Caetanis finally returned to their possession, reclaiming the marsh lands, planting trees and roses in large numbers, and creating an English style romantic garden. Nestled off the northern coast of Sicily, Salina is a stunning secret hideaway in the Aeolian Archipelago.

There are seven Aeolian islands

There are seven Aeolian islands and, while its sister islands—Lipari, Stromboli, and Panarea—often steal the spotlight, Salina – which counts less than 3,000 inhabitants, remains a well-kept secret, offering a serene escape from the usual tourist trails. For authentic island experiences with unparalleled culinary delights, Salina is the perfect base for any Aeolian adventure and can be reached by ferry from many Italian ports including Palermo, Messina, Reggio Calabria and Naples.

Salina’s main port is Santa Marina

Salina’s landscape is dominated by the striking twin peaks of ancient volcanic cones, which have blessed the island with fertile, mineral-rich soil. The island's main port, Santa Marina, welcomes visitors with the quintessential charm of a classic Sicilian town bristling with narrow streets lined with quaint houses, inviting seafood trattorias, and chic aperitif bars. There is also no shortage of charming boutiques, where hand-painted ceramics and artisanal food products reflect the island's rich culture and traditions.

Here there are hidden black sand beaches awaiting exploration, while the cool interiors of stunning churches provide a welcome respite from the Mediterranean sun. Scenic trails wind through olive groves, leading to breathtaking lookout points that showcase the island's natural beauty.

Pollara, the quintessence of authentic Sicilian charm

Pollara, a tiny, whitewashed village on the north coast has dramatic cliffs, unspoiled vistas and a small shingle beach, and is a place where time slows down and the simple pleasures of life—stunning views, delicious food, and genuine hospitality—abound. Look no further than Salina: an island paradise that combines natural beauty with authentic Sicilian charm.

The legendary Alitalia brand has just made a comeback.

After years of nostalgia for a name that accompanied generations of travellers worldwide, ITA Airways has reintroduced the Alitalia logo. It is a soft reintroduction, “Inspired by Alitalia” that, by the end of 2024, ITA Airways says will be part of its brand “at select strategic touchpoints.”

It feels as good as bumping into an old friend you haven’t seen in quite a while, and while it’s probably nothing more than wishful thinking, one day might we see the name Alitalia soaring high again above the clouds, carried by the winds on a new-generation Boeing or Airbus?

Nothing and no one can stop us dreaming. For now, well done ITA Airways.
