From 15 September 2026 to 14 February 2027 the doors of Palazzo Bonaparte will open to one of the most eagerly awaited exhibitions of the year, dedicated to Vassily Kandinsky, the visionary Russian artist who changed the language of painting forever. More than twenty-five years after the last major retrospective in the capital, the father of abstract art returns to the limelight with an exhibition bringing together more than seventy works, mainly from the Centre Pompidou in Paris, home to the world’s most important collection dedicated to the artist. This exceptional loan allows the Italian public to admire masterpieces rarely exhibited outside France, making this Roman event all the more special.

Tracing the artist’s entire creative journey

Stepping into the galleries of Palazzo Bonaparte is a journey that leads to the heart of the artistic exploration of an artist who transforms colour into emotion and painting into a form of visual music. Kandinsky did not paint what he saw, but what he felt. His canvases thus become compositions in which lines, circles, triangles and colours interact like instruments in an orchestra, creating a universal language that fascinates and captivates. The exhibition traces the artist’s entire creative journey, from his formative years through to full artistic maturity. It also recounts Kandinsky’s remarkable personal story: having studied Law and Political Economy at Moscow University, he abandoned a promising academic career to follow a calling that was destined to revolutionize the history of art.

Inspired by Monet and Wagner

Among the events that shaped his artistic development, two fundamental experiences stand out. The first was his encounter with Claude Monet’s famous Haystacks, before which he realized that colour could exist independently of the subject depicted. The second was hearing Richard Wagner’s Lohengrin at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, leading him to understand how painting could evoke emotions with the same intensity as music. From this extraordinary insight arose a new way of conceiving art, destined to influence generations of artists. The exhibition is divided into five sections: from his early figurative paintings, the exhibition moves on to his years in Munich and the founding of the Blaue Reiter, the
movement established in 1911 and a decisive experience in the development of the European avant-garde. The journey continues through the Bauhaus period, during which Kandinsky explored the relationship between art, architecture and geometry, up to his final years in Paris, and an increasingly refined synthesis of form and colour.

Watercolours, engravings, photographs and personal effects

One of the most moving moments of the visit are some of the artist’s most famous masterpieces. The Black Arch (1912) marks a definitive shift towards abstraction, whilst Gelb-Rot-Blau (1925) stands as one of the finest examples of his artistic exploration in a perfectly balanced composition in which every element seems to resonate like a musical note. The exhibition also features watercolours, engravings, photographs, documents, personal effects and materials from the Bibliothèque Kandinsky, offering a glimpse into the master’s creative workshop and provides a deeper understanding of his sources of inspiration and the long journey that led him to one of the most profound artistic revolutions of the twentieth century.
