Where can you find the world’s best local food?  Not an easy question, but  www.tasteatlas, the site that has catalogued over 10,000 local foods, has come up with an answer. By combining the average of the ratings of the best local and regional dishes with the average Google rating of the best traditional restaurants in cities around the world, it lists the ones with the world’s best local food.

And Italy comes out with flying colours. With three cities in the top four. Top of the list for the world’s best local eating is Florence with “its simplicity and focus on high-quality local ingredients. And for its delightful fusion of old-world charm and modern culinary innovation, with a unique emphasis on farm-to-table dining and an array of intimate family-run trattorias.”

Hot on Florence’s heel is Rome for its “hearty, flavorful dishes made from simple, fresh ingredients”. After Lima in third place, we’re back in Italy again, and heading south to Naples, “the birthplace of pizza, and of the Piazza Margherita, topped with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil, symbolizing the colors of the Italian flag”.

And when you want more, Milan and Venice, two more cities with vibrant food traditions and great eateries are in 10th and 11th position.  We’d find it extremely challenging to pick just one. So next time you’re in Italy, try them all!

A new Four Seasons near St. Peter's in Rome is, apparently, to open for the 2025 Jubilee according to rumors that have been doing the rounds.

A 5-star hotel right beside St. Peter’s Basilica

About a year ago two possibilities were being discussed: one involving Palazzo Marini hear the Trevi Fountain the other the Palazzo della Rovere on the Via Conciliazione beside  St. Peter's Basilica. It now seems the choice is the Palazzo della Rovere, despite the controversy surrounding the decision to open a highly luxurious establishment near the most important church in Christianity.

The property is owned by the Order of the Holy Sepulcher

The property is owned by the Order of the Holy Sepulcher which made the official announcement that they had signed an agreement with a subsidiary of the Fort Partners group on March 10. According to the agreement a portion of Palazzo della Rovere will be leased for hotel use and managed by the Four Seasons group.

The hotel will have 77 rooms and a Michelin restaurant

Fort Partners is a Puerto Rican investment firm founded by Nadim Ashi who has previously partnered with Four Seasons in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The contract for Palazzo della Rovere, it is said, is valued at approximately $52.4 million over a period of 27 years. The new hotel should be operational for the 2025 Jubilee of 2025 and will feature 77 rooms, including 13 suites, a spa, a gym, and a Michelin restaurant.

The monumental and magnificent Palace of Caserta is just half an hour from Naples, and two hours from Rome.

Caserta has two UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Caserta’s Royal Palace is the largest royal residence in the world by volume, and was built from 1752 onwards by Charles Bourbon whose family at the time reigned over the Kingdom of Naples. From a historical and cultural point of view, Caserta, which is near Naples, is one of the most interesting cities in the Campania region. Apart from the magnificent Bourbon Royal Palace it can also boast the Royal Belvedere of San Leucio and the Acquedotto Carolino which is now another UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Caserta is called the Versailles of Italy

The Royal Palace of Caserta, nicknamed the Versailles of Italy for its similarity in opulence and grandeur to the French royal palace is Paris, is surrounded by an immense park. Everything inside and outside the palace was designed by the architect Luigi Vanvitelli, who wanted to create a masterpiece that would become, to all intents and purposes, the nucleus of the new Bourbon capital of the Kingdom of Naples.

The grand staircase inspired those built in other royal residences

The palace has a rectangular layout with four internal courtyards, a long portico linking the park and the waterfall and the Scalone d'Onore grand staircase. This is a true masterpiece which inspired the construction of all the grand staircases of later royal residences. Opposite the Scalone there is the Palatine Chapel, on the western side we find the Court Theatre, while the Quadreria is a modern addition, opened in 2011 to house paintings ranging from the 16th to the 19th century.

The Italian and English gardens extend over three kilometres

If the interior of the Reggia is an example of magnificence, pomp and beauty, it is in the Italian and English gardens (inspired by the gardens of the great 18th-century villas and royal palaces including Versailles) that the Bourbons best transmitted the sense of power and grandeur they sought to convey. The gardens extend as far as the eye can see for over three kilometres thanks to the “telescope effect” walkway, and the exquisite fountains and pools that embellish the vast 300-acre park.

One of the most beautiful period gardens in all of Europe, the Giardino Storico di Valsanzibio is in Galzignano Terme, in the province of Padua.

A Villa and park set in verdant countryside

Nestled amidst the rolling Euganean Hills, this splendid park was built in the 17th century at the behest of the Venetian Barbarigo family and today is the verdant setting of Villa Barbarigo Pizzoni Ardemani.

Valsanzibio

Magnificent trees planed as long as three centuries ago

Here, art and human ingenuity are skillfully blended with the beauty of nature: Baroque statues in Istrian stone, sculptures and the architecture are complemented by ponds, waterfalls and fountains in a riot of water features. As you explore the parkland, you will discover wonderful trees including yews, white magnolias and sequoias imported centuries ago from the New World, as well as conifers, cedars and box hedges reaching up to six metres in height! And if the height does not particularly impress you, these box trees were planted a good three hundred years ago in order for them to reach their current stature.

Valsanzibio Euganean Hills

One of the world’s oldest and best-preserved mazes

The garden was originally designed as a symbolic path, a journey of redemption reminiscent of Dante's Divina Commedia: from the Portal of Diana one reaches the staircase of the sonnet on a path leading man from error to truth. Even today, you can challenge your sense of direction, overcoming the many obstacles you will find along the way as you walk through the centuries-old boxwood labyrinth, one of the oldest and best-preserved mazes in the world. Once you have passed the seven pitfall routes (seven, like the deadly sins) you will reach the top of a tower from which you will symbolically gain a clearer view of your life.

The Italian Blue Route 2023 is a promotional journey along ancient Mediterranean sea routes.

A Mediterranean journey in the Jancris sailing boat

Blue Tour’s Italian Blue Route itinerary, aimed at the development of territorial sustainability and of the economy of the sea, brings together places, knowhow and traditions, and the great cultural, gastronomic and natural characteristics of the sea, the coast and their communities. This single coastal itinerary on the handsome Jancris sailing boat interprets and promotes Italy’s great maritime heritage, developing synergies and vision with the blueconomy and the land. Local communities along the route become players in optimizing the social context, accessibility, and inclusiveness, also through the sharing of good practices and experiences gleaned from other European and international territories.

Tracing the ancient route of Ulysses

The Jancris is to set sail from Lerici in Liguria on 18 June, stopping in Punta Ala in Tuscany and then in the Porto di Traino and the Porto di Roma in Lazio.  The Italian Blue Route then heads south to Calabria, moves on to Messina in Sicily and ends in Calabria’s Porto di Roccella Ionica on 5-6 August. Following the ancient route of Ulysses through Calabria and Sicily, it sails along some of the most beautiful parts of the Italian coastline.

Promoting territorial sustainability and the economy of the sea

The theme of the Mediterranean’s ancient navigation routes is one of the pivotal points on this itinerary highlighting ancient peoples and cultures, as it connects the sea with the coast and with the hinterland, in a dialogue that has long accompanied the relationship between man, land and the water. Drawing on Italy’s past, Blue Tour’s project is strongly projected towards the role local communities together with public and private players, can play in the development of territorial sustainability and the economy of the sea.
