Civita di Bagnoregio. The town near Viterbo in Latium where time has stood still

Tuesday, 25 January 2022 10:15

Civita di Bagnoregio in the province of Viterbo, in Latium, where time seems to have stood still is about 90 minutes by car from Rome: a tiny town, connected to the rest of the world only by a long and narrow bridge. Perched on high on top of a tuffaceous peak, it watches over the surrounding valley in defence of the old medieval homes and the few families who still reside there.

Known as the Dying City

Civita di Bagnoregio is known as the Dying City for the constant erosion of the tuffaceous hill on which it stands. The unreal landscape and the walk up to the town are an enchanting and unforgettable experience for visitors.

The Santa Maria Gate is adorned with two lions holding a human head between their paws in memory of a revolt of the inhabitants of Civita against the Monaldeschi family from Orvieto.

The voice reassured her saying that the Lord had answered her prayers and that the plague would soon end. In fact it ended a few days later at the same time as the woman died.
