With the opening of the new passenger terminal at Rome Urbe Airport, the development of Regional Air Mobility (RAM) has officially begun.

A hub for the short-haul network

Rome Urbe Airport is set to become the hub of the short-haul network, with night-time operations possible thanks to its floodlit runway and new integrated helicopter-aircraft routes. The project conceived by ENAC (the Italian Civil Aviation Authority) through its in-house company ENAC Servizi promoting short-haul air travel integrated with other transport systems. The aim is to  create a flexible and extensive national network that can improve connections between regions and expand access to transport, whilst also meeting new social needs, using pet-friendly aircraft.

SkyAlps, AvioItaliana and Altair are interested

he first commercial RAM services from Rome Urbe will commence by the end of the year, using aircraft with between nine and a maximum of 19 seats, connecting Urbe with Rome Fiumicino, Pescara, Fano, Elba and Tortolì-Arbatax airports. The first airlines to have so far expressed an interest in launching these routes are SkyAlps, for fixed-wing aircraft services, AvioItaliana with helicopters, and Altair.

"The RAM network will enhance regional airports"

We are launching the first component of the RAM network, which ENAC has established to strengthen connections between regions and enhance regional airports,- said ENAC president Pierluigi Di Palma. -This strategy aims at restoring a central role to regions that have remained on the fringes of major tourism circuits, highlighting their identity, quality of life and environmental heritage. Thanks to new-generation aircraft and innovative operating models, regional airports will be able to offer more accessible and efficient connections, and contribute to a more balanced development of these regions.”

"Level up: the network takes shape"

The opening ceremony, with the slogan "Level up: the network takes shape," was also attended by the deputy prime minister and minister for infrastructure and transport, Matteo Salvini. Marco Trombetti, Sole Director of ENAC Servizi, added: “The new passenger terminal at Rome Urbe Airport represents the innovative model that ENAC Servizi will promote across its entire network of airport infrastructure: spaces open to all that can accommodate not only passengers but also facilities for the public good, such as educational and information activities, and meeting points.”
