Once completed - the forecast is for 2026 - the new Line 1 metro station at Naples Capodichino Airport Airport will link the city centre in just 9 minutes.
Connecting the port, airport and railway network
And that's not all: Naples will be one of the few cities in the world to have a metro line that will directly connect the three major poles of the city's mobility: the port, the airport, and the railway network, including the high-speed line.
A port-airport-historical centre system on a single underground route
Line 1 already extends over 20 kilometres with 20 stations. This closes the circle: creating an integrated port-airport-historical centre system on a single metropolitan route. “There are very few cities in the world with a similar network,- said municipal councillor Chiara Marciani, -It is a piece that completes a mosaic begun ten years ago. Work on the €130 million project began on 5 May 2015.”
Eight central panoramic lifts
Work is currently underway to complete the atrium, with glass fixtures and metal cladding, and the installation of the eight central panoramic lifts leading up to the platforms, custom-designed to withstand strong earthquakes. The architectural design of the Capodichino station is inspired by St. Patrick's Well in Orvieto, one of the most fascinating works of the Italian Renaissance, which reaches a depth of 54 metres.
An avantgarde environment
The Capodichino station is a single, open, circular environment with an internal diameter of about 33 metres and a depth of about 50 metres, served by eight central lifts and four helicoidal staircases winding along the walls to the atrium, which is at street level.
