In a bumper month of August, Trenitalia recorded double-digit growth transporting over 35 million passengers.
9 million weekend passengers and 3.5 million under 15s
This is a 15% increase over August 2022, with overall figures that also improved on the performance of summer 2019. Trenitalia’s positive trend recorded in 2022 and confirmed in the first half of the current year is therefore continuing, with a steady increase in demand. Of the 35 million passengers carried in August, around 9 million were concentrated on weekends, with 3.5 million young people under 15 travelling on Frecciarossa, Intercity and Regional trains on family discounts. At the end of the summer 13 million travellers under the age of 26 will have chosen the train for their holidays.
“We expect 75 million passengers between July and September”
Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin and Bologna are among the most popular destinations, with the Apulian cities of Bari and Lecce topping the southern cities. "In recent months tourism has taken over. We expect 75 million tourists between July and September on our Trenitalia High Speed, Intercity and Regional trains,” said Luigi Corradi, ceo of Trenitalia.
