Bagno Vignoni, Tuscany’s historic spa town, has outdoor thermal pools

Tuesday, 03 May 2022 10:09

Located in the heart of the Val D'Orcia, Bagno Vignoni is one of the most charming and best-preserved medieval villages in Tuscany.

The spa establishments, houses and the Church of San Giovanni Battista are all on the central square around the ancient pool,  the waters of which are from the original thermal flow that springs from the volcanic soil.

Bathing is allowed in the Park of the Mills

The village, in a picture-perfect landscape and with one of the most famous vineyards in Tuscany, is famous for its spas, which date back to ancient Roman times. Bathing in the pool in the centre of the town has been prohibited for some decades for reasons of decorum but you can find areas in which to enjoy the waters in the Park of the Mills.

Free spa waters and easy parking

In a not too large flat area with bushes and shrubs you find the thermal basin at the foot of a limestone shelf. The easiest way to reach these free spa waters is by taking the second road on the left, heading up towards the village on a dirt road, having deviated from the Via Cassia. It is possible to park cars here.

Spa hotels with fabulous pools

Those wishing to indulge in a more comfortable break should choose to stay in one of the numerous spas in the area which have fabulous swimming pools and breath-taking views of the Val d'Orcia.

Local Tuscan foods and wines

The surrounding area is also famous for its food and wines, so after relaxing in the sulphurous waters, a good glass of wine is a must, and is even better when accompanied by some typical delicacies such as the local charcuterie.
