The Egadi Islands are a protected marine area
At the BTE in Palermo ItaliAbsolutely met Sara Di Stefano, who works in the ISO Legacies Area of the Egadi Islands protected area. “I take care of environmental education in our protected marine area, and we are here at the BTE show on behalf of the Municipality of Favignana, which manages our protected area on behalf of the Ministry of the Environment.”
“The factory where tuna was processed is now a museum
“Our islands have many nature trails both by the sea and on the land, and there is also a lot of culture on our islands like the former Florio factory, and the tonnare of Favignana and Formica where tuna used to be processed, and which is now a museum of industrial archaeology.
Nature trails with different grades of difficulty
Last year there were the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the death of Donna Florio whose family made the Egadi Islands famous back in the 19th century. “We also have natural monuments like the Genovese Cave, and on Marettimo we have some naturale routes of great interest, a site called Case Romane, where there is a Byzantine church that can be visited, and there are also nature trails with different grades of difficulty.”
Historical monuments and a gallery of modern art
ItaliAbsolutely met Councillor Anello at the Sicilian capital’s recent BTE non-hotel tourism fair, and we asked him what visitors should not miss in his city. “There is so much to see in Palermo, but I guess the main things to visit are our historical monuments such as the Norman Palace, the cathedral and the Arab-Norman itinerary with another seven monumental sites. Then we have the magnificent GAM, which is the Gallery of Modern Art.”
Street food in local markets
Palermo is also famous for its food and the city’s biggest food market, the Vuccheria, is on most visitor itineraries. “Food and wine tourism is very important here in Palermo,- said Councillor Anello, -and our products are appreciated the world over. Besides the Vuccheria there are also the Ballarò and the Capo markets. Tourists love to visit them to try our street food like the famous panelle which are rolls made from chickpea flour and deep fried, and then there are sandwiches with sliced spleen and cheese, which are local favourites.”
A city of art and a city of the sea
Palermo the city of art can be combined with Palermo the city of the sea with carefree days on golden Mondello Beach. “And there are other wonderful beaches in nearby towns along the coast,” said Anello, who went on to add that the city’s municipal council is supporting upgrading projects in hotels and also in holiday homes.
United Airlines to launch 2025 flights from New York
Regarding international arrivals Councillor Anello said the flights operated by Neos to Palermo from New York are an important factor in the city’s tourism growth, as will be the new flights United Airlines will launch next year, also from New York.
