ADR, the company that manages Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, has renovated Terminal 3 at a cost pf over €250 million.

The Terminal is for non-Schengen flights

The renovation works are expected to ensure an increase of more than 30% in passenger capacity. Completed in time for the summer season's traffic peaks, they are also aimed at improving the operational efficiency and travel experience for the millions of passengers on non-Schengen flights that now transit the airport, while meeting the highest standards of security and technological innovation.

The overall area is as big as six football pitches

The upgrading of Terminal 3, preceded by the complete restyling of the façade, which restored its original architectural values of visual permeability and natural light, was carried out while guaranteeing the airport's operational continuity over the four years of the works. It involved an area spread over three levels, on a total of 41,000 square metres, comparable in size to about six football pitches.

More check-in islands and baggage belts

A total of six check-in islands were renovated with 150 new counters, bringing the infrastructure to a total of 248 counters, 60 of which can be used by passengers autonomously. The number of baggage belts was increased from nine to 14, with a doubling of the overall length from about 400 metres to 800 metres, thus guaranteeing greater capacity and flexibility for baggage handling while the border areas were upgraded for transit flights.

A further €9 billion will go into new developments

“This work on Terminal 3 is part of the medium-long term infrastructural enhancement strategy that, over the last ten years, has led us to invest, on Fiumicino and Ciampino airports, about €3 billion,- said ADR’s CEO Marco Troncone. -It is a step that has projected Rome’s airport into the world elite in terms of service quality, and which has generated a formidable economic and employment spin-off. The next step will be the launching of the new long-term development plan with an additional €9 billion of investments.”

Rome Fiumicino Airport boosts its ties with art, putting Giò Pomodoro's “Grande folla n.1” on display in Terminal 1.

The sculpture will be on display for a year

The 1964 bronze sculpture from the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, which will be on display at Fiumicino for a whole year, has been restored thanks to the support of Aeroporti di Roma.
ADR pomodoro Grande Folla 3

The work reflects passengers in Terminal 1

On its sinuous golden and mirrored surface, the work projects a chiaroscuro alternation of solids and voids that multiply and distort the reflections of passengers in the Terminal. The alternating convex and concave surfaces create a fluid image of the “Piazza” in boarding area A, capturing all the vitality of the airport and enhancing its dynamism. The sculpture is accompanied in the internal square of Fiumicino airport by multimedia projections illustrating the Gnamc collection, the most important collection of Italian modern and contemporary art in the world.
ADR pomodoro Grande Folla 2

“A tribute to Italian culture and art and to passengers”

“The exhibition of ‘Grande Folla n.1’ is a further tribute that ADR wishes to pay to Italian culture and art and to its passengers,- says c Vincenzo Nunziata, president of Aeroporti di Roma. -Hosting this exhibition at the airport demonstrates that Italy is not only the repository of an illustrious artistic heritage of the past, but is also capable of expressing a contemporary creative vitality. Our thanks go to the Gnamc for making this possible.”

An expression of Italian creativity

“This art work is one of the masterpieces of the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome, an imposing work that first attracts and then captures the gaze, and it shows that our country does not live solely on the reverberations of its magnificent tradition but continues to be an extraordinary hotbed of creativity,” said Renata Cristina Mazzantini, Director of the Gnamc.
