Ferrara, in the Emilia Romagna region, is a splendid art city, and its mayor Alan Fabbri is confident that tourism will recover in 2022.

Like all Italy’s art cities Ferrara was particularly hard hit by the Covid crisis, and Mayor Fabbri outlines the many measures that have, and are being taken, to ensure that visitor numbers increase this year. 

Exhibitions,  museums and theatre festivals  

”Over the last two difficult years we rolled out bids for projects to support cultural activities, and we set up security protocols allowing us to organize events when this was possible. Sometimes we had as many a ten exhibitions and musems open, and our theatre season of drama, opera and dance was a success, as was the November Ferrara Food Festival. On New Year’s weekend we attracted 1,800 visitors with the offer of free entry to our museums for an overnight stay.”     

Ferrara is twinned with Toledo in Ohio

“Ferrara’s image is going around the world: we are twinned with Toledo in Ohio, and we are targetting the US market in particular. In Europe the Petit Palais in Paris will host an exhibition dedicated to Ferrara’s great painter Giovanni Boldini, and the writer Manfredo Manfredini is the focus of studies in Germany.”

“In 2021 we had a 38% rise in tourist arrivals” 

With an annual €3 million being invested in tourism in Ferrara, and with the tourist tax contributing an average €800,000 Mayor Fabbri says that in 2021 the city saw an overall rise of 38% in tourist arrivals and 40% in overnights compared to 2020. 

“These are far from the pre-Covid figures, but they are an encouraging sign. The pandemic has deprived the municipal coffers of €13.2 million, but what is worse are the effects of the closures in tourism-related concerns.  We have allocated some €2 million municipal funds to support the hospitality sector, from hotels to farmstays.”

“We must offer visitors accessibility as well as quality services and products” 

"I think that Covid has contributed greatly to the redefinition of destinations, lifestyles and ways of approaching travel. This means a return to local tourism and a strong focus on quality. The Th Resorts in the north of Italy conclude the peak winter season with positive numbers despite the difficulties associated with the resurgence of the pandemic, with 60,000 visitors enjoying the company’s mountain resorts from the Valle d’Aosta to the Trentino Alto Adige.

Italians were up 15% but there were 20% fewer foreign visitors 

Stefano Maria Simei, Th Group Commerical and Marketing Director said:

“Despite the pandemic we have seen strong numbers, at times we were even sold out, bringing us very close to the results of the successful 2019/2020 winter season. There has been a positive shift in Italian customers (+ 15%) but foreign visitors were down (-20%) compared to two winters ago. We have worked hard and we have rigorously applied all health protocols; our focus is always on safety.”

 

Efficient management of the pandemic situation

Th Resorts owns a dozen mountain resorts in the north of Italy, from Corvara, Sestriere and Madonna di Campiglio to Courmayeur, Pila, Marilleva, Passo San Pellegrino and La Thuile.  Internal procedures in the properties ensure screening and an efficient management of quarantine for anyone testing positive for the virus. 

“There have been Covid cases, but almost all of our guests were testing negative at the first quarantine testing deadlines. In cases of personnel quarantines, it was not easy to find replacements so we all worked overtime. Despite all the difficulties we can say that we made it.”

For mountain and wellness lovers 

In Italy the new entries begin in the heart of Selva di Val Gardena in the Alto Adige region with the Granbaita Dolomites Hotel, home of the Perathoner family who for over 50 years have welcomed mountain lovers from all over the world. Recently it underwent a modern renovation, and the excellent restaurant and wellness area are a tribute to the flavours and nature of the Dolomites. In Bardonecchia, which is an hour by train or car from Turin, right on the ski slopes at 2,000 meters, the Savoia Mountain Resort is an oasis of peace and has just been renovated in perfect mountain style. Manager Francesca Barba says guests can choose between the elegant suites and the characteristic chalets and that they love to indulge in pampering both at the wellness center which is in woods and at the restaurant.

From Lake Garda to the Friuli’s historic capital of Udine

In the historic center of Sirmione, which is on Lake Garda, the La Speranzina Restaurant & Relais is an intimate and elegant residence belonging to the Giordani family, that boasts romantic panoramic views and a starred restaurant helmed by chef Fabrizio Molteni. Half an hour from the city of Udine the Nodo Hotel is a brand new address in a setting of centuries-old trees and with many works of art. Guests are welcomed to the modern and comfortable property, which has been beautifully designed by owner Riccardo Facchini to minimize environmental impact. The best way to chill out is to relax in the restaurant or reserve a treatment in the wellness area.

In Umbria, in the heart of the Valnerina valley near the little town of Sellano, which is 50 kilometres from the regional capital Perugia, you'll find the Castello di Postignano. Here general manager Nino Di Bonito introduces travellers to the authentic hospitality of a hotel set in a medieval village, and invites to delight in the fine dining cuisine of chef Vincenzo Guarino.

Italian moviemaker Paolo Sorrentino said it all in his 2013 film The Great Beauty, his breath-taking cinematography showing Rome at its most beautiful, and etching the Eternal City’s timeless loveliness deep in our hearts.  

And now a study ranking world landmarks described as “beautiful” in reviews on Tripadvisor, has confirmed it. Because two out of the top five landmarks people called beautiful are in Rome!     

In the ParkSleepFly study on reviews that used the words beautiful, pretty, picturesque and stunning, the Trevi Fountain is in 3th position with 3,107 “beautiful” mentions. And in 5th place the Coliseum - the largest amphitheater ever built, and the largest still standing despite being nearly 2,000 years old – scores 3,051. 

The Trevi Fountain’s ranking brings back memories of an iconic cult movie: Federico Fellini’s 1960 La Dolce Vita. And the moonlight scene when platinum blonde Anita Ekberg, wearing a low-cut black evening dress, splashes and dances in the water. 

Beauty, as the saying goes, lies in the eyes of the beholder. But anyone who has stopped to toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain, or stood in awe before the Coliseum, will surely agree that Rome is one of the most beautiful places on earth.

At the end of 2021 the Ab-Ar company, part of the Baltour Group, acquired the 62-room 4-star Sporting Hotel in Teramo.

On an auction base of €1.4 million the Teramo-based company offered €3 million, adding the new property to the Gambrinus Residence in Giulianova, which has long been managed by the same company led by entrepreneur Agostino Ballone.

The hotel is undergoing a major renovation

The Baltour Group is now planning an important project to develop and relaunch the hotel. Built in the late '60s and owned for decades by the entrepreneur Elvano Alberico, the Sporting first ended up at auction in 2015, following the bankruptcy of the business of the Roman entrepreneur Alessandro Laganà, who in 2010, had invested €10.7 million to acquire and renovate the hotel.

A new look for the rooms and restaurants

The current restyling is expected to take about a year and a half and will give a new look to the  60 rooms on six floors, three conference rooms (300 seats in total), two restaurants with a total of 200 covers and a wellness area with gym.

Teramo is close to ski resorts and Adriatic beaches  

Teramo (which is some 150 kilometres from Rome) is a lively town in the mountainous heart of the Abruzzo region and an ideal destination for nature lovers, given its location between the Gran Sasso range (the highest in the central Apennines) with its renowned ski resorts, and the sunny beaches of the Adriatic Sea. Visitors to this former ancient Roman city – archaeological remains like the old amphitheatre and the public baths can be visited – can delight in its quaint streets, monuments and museums as well as its museums, shops and restaurants.  It is less than an hour by car from Pescara International Airport. 

Word has leaked that the Six Senses Roma will open at the end of 2022, and that the Anantara group has two more hotels in the pipeline for Italy.    

With 95 rooms and a spa it will also have a panoramic rooftop terrace 

The Six Senses will take over a restored building in the city's historic center, in Piazza di San Marcello which is just off the central Via del Corso one of the city’s main shopping streets, and beside the church of the same name. The complex was purchased in 2018 by Orion European Real Estate Fund V (Orion Capital Managers) for €95 million.  It will have 95 rooms, a spa and thermal baths, and the large rooftop terrace with 360-degree panoramic views promises to be a new Roman show-stopping attraction.

Two more Italian hotels for the Anantara group? 

Over at Minor (the Thai group that also owns the Nh brand) there is talk of possible new Italian developments for the Anantara brand, following the recent acquisition of the Palazzo Naiadi, which is close to Via Nazionale, another Roman landmark shopping street. General Manager Francesco Mennella has in fact revealed that his company is planning the opening of two more Anantaras in Italy. One of these, if we are to believe the rumours, could be in Milan, but Palazzo Naiadi’s GM is playing his cards close to his chest and prefers not to confirm this.
