Crespi d’Adda in Italy’s Lombardy region is a model of the ideal town

Wednesday, 26 January 2022 10:32

The village of Crespi d'Adda in the province of Bergamo in Lombardy is a model of an ideal town: a small fiefdom where the owner's castle was a symbol of both authority and benevolence toward workers and their families.

An ideal town and a UNESCO site

This authentic model of the ideal town was one of the world's most complete and original constructions, and has been perfectly preserved, keeping its urban and architectural aspects intact. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in December 1995 as one of Italy's most impressive examples of industrial archaeology.

The founder was a benevolent provider

The Crespi family, Lombard cotton industrialists, whose founder Cristoforo Benigno Crespi built a modern Ideal Work Village next to his own textile factory in 1877, gave the village its name. Workers were given a house with a vegetable garden as well as all necessary services, and the master "reigned" over this perfect little world from his castle, providing for all of the employees' needs as would a benevolent father.

Unusual and oriental architectural features

Inside the village, you can see a variety of architectural styles, the most prominent of which is the neo-Gothic-Lombard style. The church, on the other hand, is in the Renaissance style, and the Crespi castle is  neo-Medieval. The mausoleum, which incorporates elements from the Viennese Secession as well as Mesopotamian and Egyptian architecture, is complemented by exotic and oriental decorative details.

Preserved thanks to its unique geographical position

Crespi d'Adda is situated in a triangular-shaped lowland bordered by two rivers, the Adda and the Brembo, which form a peninsula known as the Isola Bergamasca at the end of which the village is situated. The area’s unique geographical characteristics and degree of marginalization help us to understand how Crespi d'Adda has been so remarkably preserved, tucked away as it is far from the chaotic development of the surrounding area.
