The award, making the airport the best in Europe, in the category of airports with over 40 million passengers, for the 6th time in seven years, came from ACI (Airport Council International) Europe at the general assembly held in Istanbul where, every year, European airports that have achieved excellence in different sectors are awarded.

Leonardo da Vinci also won the “Digital Transformation Award”

Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci, this year's winner ex-aequo with Istanbul’s iGA international airport, also won the “Digital Transformation Award.” for its commitment to digitalization and the promotion of innovation. Increasingly "digital, reliable, data-driven and sustainable," is how the jury of experts described Rome Fiumicino airport, which is managed and developed by Aeroporti di Roma, a company of the Mundys group, which thus consolidates its leadership in Europe following the "Best Airport Award" in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2023.
Awarded also for the design of new modes of transport

The evaluation criteria included Adr's commitment to “operations” and the “customer experience,” the development of new "green" infrastructures and the airport's Skytrax 5-Star commitment as a "Careport" promoting an increasingly sustainable airport while regarding innovation, it was awarded as a driver for the development of the sector, including the design and planning of new modes of transport.

€2.5 billion invested in the last ten years

"Achieving this result ex-aequo with the new, large Istanbul airport, as well as the Digital Transformation Award, pushes us even more to think about the future, – said Aeroporti di Roma’s CEO Marco Troncone. -If today Fiumicino Airport is able to optimally manage its major traffic growth, it is thanks to a vision that has led us to implement major investments, even in the most difficult of times, - amounting to €2.5 billion in the last ten years (about 50% of the resources invested in the same period by the entire Italian airport sector). Now, in order to continue to compete at the level of the world's major hubs, it is important that the development trajectory of our airport can continue to cope with the further passenger growth expected in coming years.”

A record 173,000 passengers on 23 June 2024

As proof of Rome’s capacity to attract arrivals, in recent weeks the Leonardo da Vinci has recording a 20% increase in passenger traffic compared to the same period in 2023 and, on Sunday 23 June, a new historical record of passengers transited through the airport in a single day topping 173,000.
