Work is proceeding at a fast pace on the construction of the railway link that will bring the centre of Milan closer to Bergamo Airport.
Reducing travel times by one third
The future Caravaggio Express will reduce travel times to Bergamo’s Orio al Serio Airport by a third compared to the current time, transforming regional mobility and the access to the airport. The project was outlined at a press conference promoted by SACBO (management Milan Bergamo airport management company) and CIFI (College of Italian Railway Engineers) that presented a survey carried out on over 1,000 interviewees by Systematica - Pts Clas on travellers' propensity to use the train to reach the airport.
Trains will cover the distance in 51 minutes
Passengers will take 51 minutes to reach Milano Centrale from Bergamo Airport with this new express service which will have more than 150 daily connections: 150 round trips to Milan with a train every 20-30 minutes and a train every 10 minutes to Bergamo Station. There will then be connections to Treviglio and other cities in Lombardy.
Inspired by the Malpensa Express
Analyses show that, when fully operational, the new line could intercept up to 30% of passengers in transit from Milan Bergamo airport, helping to reduce road traffic and make travel more sustainable. Today some 65% of travellers reach the airport by car, 33% by bus and 2% by taxi. The aim is to bring Bergamo closer to Milan and make the airport more competitive, along the lines of the Malpensa Express, which today carries some five million passengers a year. “This new service will be a radical change for our airport: with the railway we will achieve the multimodality that Europe has long been asking us for,” said SACBO’s president Giovanni Sanga.
